Turning redistributes material between the inside and outside of the pile and improves conditions for airflow. Aeration supplies oxygen for aerobic microorganisms.
Mechanical turning, natural ventilation and forced aeration serve different roles. Windrow, trough and reactor systems require equipment and operating arrangements suited to their respective layouts.
Set the turning frequency and airflow against feedstock properties, temperature and moisture. A frequency or airflow quoted in a general article should not be transferred to every project without checking process conditions.
