Composting uses bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi and other microorganisms to break down biodegradable organic matter under managed conditions. The material gradually becomes more stable as decomposition and humification proceed.
Microbial metabolism releases heat. The pile moves through warming, high-temperature and cooling stages, with different microbial groups contributing at different stages.
Feedstock properties, moisture and oxygen supply affect the process. Turning and aeration should be matched to the composting system and adjusted to actual conditions; equipment capacity alone does not determine compost maturity.
